A Nikon Z9 is hardly a "prosumer" camera. At $5500 for the body only it's within $500 of an entry level RED camera. Mix in 3 S line premium lenses & you're up to about $12-13K...double or triple the lens investment if you're doing professional work with long telephotos. That's in the same ballpark for what it takes to outfit a full RED cinema rig. Nikon's market for hybrid full frame mirrorless cameras is many times larger than the one RED is in. So of course they're not interested in doing away with their Z line. Nikon is positioning themselves to catch Canon & Sony in that market & push RED up the ladder to compete with ARRI at the cinema level.

"I think Nikon doesn't want to get rid of their Z camera". Really? Damn it's in their bread and butter. The Z8 and Z9 are among the best cameras in the world. It accounts for most of their photography income. For the last 100+ years Nikon has been an optics company. Initially they made lenses for Canon. Then their own cameras. They make binoculars, range finders, and top quality microscopes. Of course they are going to make lenses for Red.

A settlement between Nikon and Red outside the court most probably means Nikon paid Red quite a bit of cash. Not that they agreed to disagree!

This was unexpectedly useful, thanks. It was refreshing hearing you voice your thoughts about real world use and the image in your mind, rather than falling for the marketers' psychological misdirection when they tug at your FOMO insecurities! Not that I'm in any way immune, but I think you bring the conversation back nicely to the real issue - for me at least - which is, what's my vision and will this camera realise it? The more I look at the footage of this camera, the more I think that extra bit of three dimensional 'pop' is really something worth having. Maybe 90% of viewers will not even see it... but the difference is there... and I am sure they will feel it.

I found a used one (not pro version) and im highly considering this even though i was hooked on auto focus but now considering learning manual as it will make me a better filmmaker. I’m new and this would be my first pro camera outside of my iphone 11 haha. I have done 5 weddings with my iphone 11 and gimble and want a pro camera and I use davinci resolve so it would help greatly. I’m not in photos much and want to do just video mostly so thinking this would be great first camera to learn on. I was looking at a sony A7iii or A7c because of their features which there is atleast 3 big features in those that BM doesn’t have but now im thinking this would be better for me and what i need it for which is mostly weddings and other product videos. I want my post work to be easier and highly value that part as its the most time consuming thing

The ISO selector doesn’t work properly and exposure self adjusts itself when it needs to, no matter what you do. This app has a long way to go if it is to be used properly. There are reasons for manual controls, and international standards that have meaning and usefulness, so let’s stick with then, yeah?

I would also add that anyone using autofocus isn't a film maker

all these so called "film makers"aka youtubers are fos, they couldn't tell the footage differences between an alexa and bmpcc at any resolution

I actually would want this camera but I hate the form factor, like really hate it. It’s so weirdly bulky, I’d love them to make it into a box cine camera, it would be a market breaker

I thought the film wasn't great, maybe 5-6/10, but visually it was beautiful. Im SO shocked to hear it was shot on an FX3, it really just shows what is possible with modern tech when you know what you're doing.

Remember Folks, Major studio productions and Netflix series are almost all shot in 4k and many still in 2k prores. However an Arri shooting 2k prores4444 is a much better quality pixel but its still only 2k. Theaters project movies in 2k on massive screens although at a much higher bit rate. I really wish Blackmagic would just make a better quality super35 4k sensor. The whole resolution race is silly and a total marketing strategy aimed at young filmmakers. 6k, 8k, 12k ? - give me a break. When I shoot 2k prores on my Alexa with a Master Prime, It looks WAY WAY better than any mega pixel Blackmagic camera I've ever owned, and I've own almost all of them. Blackmagic is a great company with awesome little cameras for the price, I just wished they would drop the whole mega resolution thing and just make a better professional sensor.

Hi, loved your video and low-key approach - so refreshing! I'm thinking of getting an iPhone Pro. I use FCP - do you think it would be possible to import a file using the BM iOS app into FCP?

I am so happy with this App on the new iPhone Pro Max. I record directly to my SSD and walking around I have a micro Thumb drive. The best thing is that this App automatically generates a proxy file also. This has streamlined my workflow. I also have done multi cam using multiple iPad and iPhones. I have not had an issue in Resolve with the proxies are linked and everything is working perfectly.

I watched it at the cinema yesterday. Looked great but there was something odd about the motion blur, didn't feel like 180 degrees shutter angle. Also the lead actors acting in the first half felt monotone.

If you look at the ending credits, he categorizes the crew by location. That is such brilliant planning. So by location, you can tell the crew size was small. It’s fascinating how Gareth planned this film out.

Is there a way to switch off sharpening in the app?

I've been shooting commercial and narrative for 10 years. I don't care one bit about the form of the camera or the rolling shutter. I do care about the post workflow a lot and the final image. That's where BM shines. Everything just works. BRAW is amazing and that new sensor looks like it can create some amazing images. I don't care what some RUclipsr says who is a "filmmaker" with literally zero credits on IMDB. This thing is going to sell like hotcakes in the real indie filmmaking community. Super excited to use anamorphics on this one (kinda of a bonus for me!)

Black magic keeping the same body style is dumb. (Or they didn’t want to sink Money into RND for new fork factor/menu etc.) the original concept for that body style was a compact camera that could shoot cinema quality video. By itself that’s not an issue, but the problem is that the form has gotten bigger and more awkward, while it’s competitors are now smaller while providing competitive image quality. Considering that most people rig out their cameras anyways, it just doesn’t make sense over a more modular design.

Agreed its all about the shot, composition and an individuals ability in Post Production. Blackmagic Cameras deliver incredible images, particularly for the price-they can NOT be beaten. Anyone who says different is probably more reliant on their gear than their talent...

Very well said. As an owner of 15 cameras 10 of them cinema cameras and a slave to GAS I completely concur. What really hurts is my first short film (which I love) was shot on a simple dslr.(Canon t6)
